Apps
Apps are programs that post in your channels, hear what happens there, and ask questions on cards with buttons and short forms. Each one shows its own name and picture with an APP badge, so you never mistake it for a person. Polls are built in: anyone who isn’t a guest can start one from the composer.
The pages below come in three parts:
- Using apps, for everyone: apps in your channels, answering their cards, polls, and sending feedback to buildIt.social.
- Setting up apps, for org owners and admins: creating your organization’s own apps and managing them.
- Building an app, for developers: the app API, events and webhooks, the card format, and a worked example in Node.
- Apps in your channelsRecognize an app by its APP badge, add one to a channel or remove it, and know what it can see there.
- Answering app cardsAnswer an app's buttons and forms, read the note it sends back, change your answer, and see the results.
- PollsAsk a quick question with a poll in a channel or DM, vote, change your vote, see the results, and close it.
- Send feedback to buildIt.socialReport a bug or ask for a feature in
- Create an appTurn on apps for your organization, create an app with its name, picture, permissions and events, and copy its token and signing secret. For org owners and admins
- Manage an appVerify an app's webhook, rotate its token and signing secret, read its logs, resume it when paused, turn it off, or delete it.For org owners and admins
- Build an appWhat an app is and can do, how it authenticates, the API's base URL and rules, and the permissions to ask for.
- The app APIEvery endpoint of the app API, with posting and changing messages, idempotency, paging, rate limits and error codes.
- Events and webhooksHow events reach your app, the envelope and every event type, the signature headers and how to verify them, retries, and polling.
- The card formatCards for developers: the elements, buttons and forms, how answers work, results and visibility, private data, updating and closing, and the limits.
- Example: a lunch bot in NodeA small Node app in TypeScript that verifies a signed webhook, posts a lunch vote card when mentioned, and shows the winner when it closes.
