Answering app cards

Apps ask questions on cards: an approval with Approve and Reject, or a short form with choices, text and dates. The card takes the message’s place in the timeline, with the app’s name, picture and APP badge above it. Your answer is recorded at once, even if the app is slow.

What a card can hold#

  • A title, text, and facts as label and value pairs.
  • Buttons. On a card with buttons, the button you pick is your answer. A red, outlined button with an × is a “danger” answer such as Reject. Some buttons ask you to confirm first.
  • A form, with choices (pick one or several), text fields and dates, and one Submit button that sends everything at once. Fields marked Required must be filled in. A text field says Sent to Deploybot under it, so you know where your words go.
  • Links, each on its own line with the site’s domain. The app shows you the real address before you leave.

Everything in our own words, such as Submit, Closed, Closes 5:00 PM and the counts, is in your language under a thin line at the bottom of the card. The app’s own text is shown as it wrote it.

Answer a card#

Select a button, or fill in the form and select Submit. The footer then says Answer recorded and You answered Approve, and the other buttons are disabled.

On a phone, three or more buttons stack full width.

When the app checks your answer#

Some cards wait for the app to accept your answer. You see Waiting for Deploybot…, and after 10 seconds Recorded. Deploybot hasn’t answered yet. Your answer counts either way. If the app is turned off or paused, the card says Deploybot isn’t responding right now, and still records your answer.

A note from the app#

The app can accept or reject your answer with a short note, shown under the card with Only you can see this:

  • Deploybot accepted your answer, with its note, such as “Deploying web now.”
  • Deploybot didn’t accept your answer, with why, such as “That date is a public holiday. Pick another one.” You can answer again, even on a card that takes only one answer.

Change your answer#

If the card allows it, select Change answer. The form opens with your answer filled in; change it and send again, or select Cancel.

Results#

What everyone sees depends on how the app set up the card:

  • Names shown: people see who answered what. Select Show who answered to see the names under each answer.
  • Counts only: people see how many chose each answer, once 3 people have answered or the card has closed.
  • Anonymous: counts only, and the app doesn’t learn who you are either. The card says Anonymous.
  • Results can show as answers come in, only when the card closes (Results show when the card closes), or never: Only Deploybot sees the answers.

You always see your own answer. Choices show as bars with counts and percentages once results show; button cards show chips.

When a card closes#

A card can have a closing time (Closes tomorrow 5:00 PM). Once it closes, or the app closes it, it says Closed and takes no more answers. The app may replace it with the outcome, such as “Approved by Ana Ruiz”.

Cards waiting for your answer#

When a card in a conversation is waiting for you, a banner at the top says Deploybot asks: and the card’s title, with Answer. With several, it says how many are waiting, with Next. The conversation list marks the conversation as Waiting for your answer. Select × to hide a card from the banner on this device.

Who can answer#

  • Guests can answer unless the app chose otherwise. Then they see the card and its results with Only members can answer.
  • Offline, an app’s card dims and says Needs a connection: you answer it when you’re back online. Text you typed stays.
  • On an older version of the app, a card it can’t show says Update buildIt.social to see this card.

Tip: Never type a password, sign-in code or card number into a card. Your answers go to the app. If an app needs you to sign in somewhere, it should give you a link to its own sign-in page.
