Pages
Every channel has its own pages: a small wiki for notes, plans, how-tos and anything your team wants to keep. Pages sit in a tree, starting with a Home page that’s made with the channel. You write them in a simple editor, and they save as you type.
Find a channel’s pages#
There are two ways in:
- In the channel: open the Docs tab, next to Chat. Every channel has one, with or without a project. On a wide window the tree and the page sit side by side; on a phone you see one at a time, with a back button to the tree.
- The Pages section: Pages in the sidebar on desktop, or in the bottom bar on phones, shows the pages of every channel you’re in, grouped by channel. The Pages button at the top of a channel’s Docs tab opens this section showing only that channel (Pages of # channel); All channels shows them all again.
Direct messages don’t have pages.
Search pages#
Select the filter button over the tree (Filter pages) and type. It searches the titles and text of every page you can read, and shows each match with a snippet. Accents and capitals don’t matter, and words match by their beginning, so you can search as you type. The app’s own search finds pages too: see Search.
Create and organize pages#
- A new page: in the tree, select + beside a channel’s name (New page in #channel), enter a title, and select Create.
- A subpage: open a page, select More (⋮), then New subpage.
- Rename a page from the same menu. A title can be up to 200 characters.
- Move puts a page under another page of the same channel, or at the Top level of the channel. Pages can’t move to another channel.
- Change the order: on desktop, drag a page in the tree onto its new place; a line shows where it lands. With the keyboard,
Alt+UpandAlt+Downmove the selected page among its siblings. On phones (and everywhere), use Move up and Move down in the page’s menu. - Delete removes a page for good. Its subpages move up one level, so they aren’t lost. Only the page’s creator or an admin can delete it.
A page with subpages shows a button under its title, such as 5 subpages. Select it to see the list: a sheet on phones, a menu on desktop. On a wide window, the tree also opens the page you’re on, so its subpages are one click away.
Note: Making a subpage, moving and deleting need a connection. Renaming and editing work offline and are sent when you’re back online.
Edit a page#
Open a page and select Edit. The title and the text become editable, with a formatting toolbar at the top. Select Done when you’ve finished.
Formatting#
The toolbar has:
- Undo and Redo;
- Bold, Italic, Strikethrough and Inline code;
- headings H1, H2 and H3;
- Bulleted list, Numbered list, Checklist, Quote and Code block (type the language, such as
python, to get syntax highlighting); - Link, Table, Horizontal rule and Insert image.
With the caret in a table, extra buttons add and delete rows and columns, or delete the table.
You can also type Markdown as you go: # and a space starts a heading, - and a space a bulleted list, 1. a numbered list, and > a quote. Pages are stored as plain Markdown, so what you paste from other Markdown documents keeps its headings, lists and links.
Tip: Pages keep to what Markdown can store. There’s no underline, text colour or text alignment.
Links#
Select some text, choose Link, enter the address and select Apply. Links can be web addresses (https://…) or email links. While editing, open a link with Ctrl/Cmd+click; when reading, a click opens it in your browser.
On phones#
The toolbar sits at the top of the editor and stays visible above the keyboard. On iPhone and iPad, Hide keyboard in the toolbar puts the keyboard away.
Pictures#
Pictures in a page are always uploaded files, never images linked from another website.
- Add one with Insert image in the toolbar, by dropping a picture onto the text, or by pasting one (a screenshot, or an image copied from a browser or your files). JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP work, up to 100 MB.
- iPhone photos in HEIC are turned into JPEG, and location data is removed before upload.
- A picture linked by its web address can’t be saved: the editor asks you to remove it and use Insert image instead.
Size and layout#
Select a picture to show the Image layout tools in the toolbar:
- Align left, Center or Align right on its own line, or Wrap text, image on the left or image on the right so the text flows beside it.
- A width of 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the text column. You can also drag the handle at the picture’s corner; it snaps to steps of 5%.
- S, M or L spacing between the picture and the text.
- Reset puts it back to its own size on the left.
On a narrow phone screen, a wrapped picture gets its own row, with no text beside it, so both stay readable.
Work items in pages#
Write an item’s key, such as WEB-42, anywhere in a page and it shows as a chip with the item’s status. Point at it to see the title; click it (or Ctrl/Cmd+click while editing) to open the item. The text stays the key, so copying the page gives you WEB-42. Keys only become chips for items you can see; a key for an item in a public channel you aren’t in shows muted, and clicking it offers to join the channel.
Linked items#
Items linked to a page show behind a button under the title, such as 3 linked items. Select it to see each item’s status, key and title, and open one. If you can edit the page, you can also unlink items there, and add one with Link item (with none linked yet, the button itself says Link item). Linking and unlinking need a connection.
For more about items, see Projects.
Note: You can’t @mention people in a page: typing @ in a page doesn’t offer a list. Mentions written elsewhere and pasted in still show.
Saving and editing together#
Pages save on their own: two seconds after you stop typing, and at least every 20 seconds while you keep going. Ctrl/Cmd+S saves right away, and so does leaving the page. The status next to the title says where things stand:
- Saved, Saving… or Unsaved changes;
- Saved on this device: you’re offline, and your edits are sent once you’re back. See Offline.
- Not saved: the server refused the edit; the tooltip says why. Select it to try again.
- Conflict: see below.
There’s no live co-editing: one person’s save replaces the page for everyone, and you see others’ saves appear when you have no unsaved edits.
When someone else edited the same page#
If someone saved the page after you started editing:
- If they changed the other part (the title while you edited the text, or the reverse), both changes are kept, and you see Saved. Changes someone else made meanwhile were kept.
- If you both changed the same part, This page changed while you were editing asks what to do: Use their version drops your edits, Save mine replaces theirs, and Keep editing lets you copy what you need first. Autosave pauses until you choose.
- If the page was deleted while you were editing, Save as new page keeps your text.
Who can read and edit pages#
- You see a channel’s pages once you’re in the channel. To read the pages of a public channel, join it first.
- Everyone in the channel can edit its pages, except guests, who can read them but not edit them.
- Pages of an archived channel are read only.
- Only a page’s creator or an admin can delete it.
Share a page#
Paste a link to a page into a message and it shows as a card with the page’s title and its channel. People who aren’t in that channel see No access instead. To get a page’s link, open the page in the web app and copy it from your browser’s address bar. The desktop and phone apps have no way to copy a page’s link.
