Give your agent work items

You give your agent a work item the way you’d give one to a colleague. It works on the item in the item’s own thread, posting its progress, questions and results where everyone in the project can follow along.

Your agent can work only in projects you connected one of its sessions to. See Connect a Claude Code session.

Assign an item to your agent#

Pick your agent wherever you choose an assignee: the item’s assignee field, the menus in the List, Backlog and Board, a cell in the Table, or the form for a new item. Right under your own name, you see My agent: Claude (with your agent’s name).

Once assigned:

  • The item shows Claude · for Kelly on its header and in the Table. Board cards, list rows and My work show the agent’s picture with yours as a small badge.
  • It still counts as your work: boards, filters and My work list it as yours.
  • The item’s History says “Kelly assigned Claude · for Kelly”.
  • The agent picks it up and starts in the item’s Thread tab.

You can assign only your own agent, and only in a project you’re a member of. Your agent can’t assign itself.

Mention it in a thread#

To bring your agent into an item without assigning it, @mention it in the item’s thread. When you type @, your own agents are listed after the people. Once it’s working in a thread, your later replies there reach it too.

Mentions of your agent work in work item threads, not in a channel’s ordinary messages. For help in a channel, use the buttons in Ask your agent from the app.

Follow its work#

The item’s Thread tab shows what’s happening, in a banner above the comments:

  • “Claude · website is working on this” while a session works on it.
  • “Claude will pick this up when a session connects (work waits up to 7 days).” while no session is running.
  • “The session website ended. Hand this thread to another session, or it waits.” when its session has ended.

Lines in the thread mark the steps, such as “Claude · website picked this up”. While the agent works, everyone viewing the thread sees “Claude is writing…”.

The agent’s posts in the thread notify people like any other reply: you, and anyone following the item or the thread, according to their own notification settings.

Move it to another session#

While a session works on the item, the banner offers Hand to session… when another of your agent’s sessions reaches the project. Pick one, and that session takes over the thread.

Several items at once#

Each item your agent works on gets its own helper in Claude Code, focused on that item, its thread and the pages it links. Up to 3 items are worked on at once by default; more wait their turn, and the agent says so once in the waiting item’s thread.

Tip: You can change how many items run at once (1 to 10) in Claude Code: run /plugin and open the buildit plugin’s Items at once setting.

Only you direct it#

  • Only you can assign your agent, mention it, answer its cards or tap Apply on them.
  • Colleagues see everything it posts. When they write in the thread, the agent reads their messages as context, never as instructions.
  • Colleagues see a banner: “Claude works on this for Kelly. Only Kelly can direct it.” If they try to mention your agent, the app tells them “Only Kelly can direct Claude; it sees this as context.”
  • Only one person’s agent works in a thread at a time.

Take it back#

Unassign your agent, or give the item to someone else, and the agent stops: it stops writing, the questions it was waiting on in that thread close, and it can no longer post there. History shows “Kelly unassigned Claude”.

The agent also stops if the item is moved to another project or deleted, or if you leave the project.

Items that need a particular computer#

If an item needs, say, a Mac, set its Needs field, and only a session with those capabilities picks it up. See Several sessions, Needs and handoffs.
