Working offline
The items in your projects are kept on your device, so you can read them and keep working without a connection. Your changes are saved on the device and sent when you’re back online. For how offline works across the whole app, see Offline.
What works offline#
- Reading: every item in your projects, with its fields, description, subtasks and thread, on every view: the Board, Backlog, List, Table and Calendar, plus My work and search in the Work hub (results from your device).
- Creating items. A new item shows as
WEB-…until it reaches the server and gets its number. - Changing status and fields: by dragging a card to another column, in the item’s Details, in the Table, or in My work.
- Editing titles and descriptions. The description says “Saved on this device” until it’s sent.
- Planning: moving items into and between sprints in the Backlog, giving items a due date on the Calendar, and Remove from this release.
- Commenting in item threads.
- Watching and unwatching items.
- Exporting a project’s view as CSV.
Cards keep their comment counts and unread dots offline. They also keep the GitHub chips you’ve already seen since you opened the app; after a restart offline, they show none until you’re back online.
What needs a connection#
These are disabled offline, and say Needs a connection:
- reordering cards and rows by dragging within a column or list;
- adding and removing links, moving an item to another project, changing its type, converting a subtask, and deleting;
- bulk edit in the Table;
- saving, updating and deleting saved views;
- creating, starting and completing sprints, and everything on releases except removing an item from one;
- release notes, reports and velocity;
- creating an item from a message, and sharing a comment to the channel;
- the watcher list, Mentioned in, and GitHub activity on an item;
- marking Inbox entries read;
- CSV import, turning a project on or off, and changing project settings.
“Not sent”#
Sometimes the server refuses a change you made offline when it arrives, for example because the workflow no longer allows that status change, or you no longer have access to the item. The change then shows as Not sent:
- The item shows a notice saying what wasn’t sent and why, such as “Your change to Status wasn’t sent.” with the reason.
- Views, My work and search results mark the item Not sent.
- The connection bar lists every item change that wasn’t sent, with Show items.
For each one, choose Retry to send it again, or Discard to drop your change and keep the item as it is on the server.
If someone changed the same part of a description while you were offline, you choose which version to keep instead. See The item view.
