The item view

Everything about an item is in one place: its fields and description, its conversation and its history. Open an item by selecting its card or row anywhere in the app: a board, a list, search, My work, a notification or a key in chat.

How an item opens#

  • On a computer, the web and wide tablets, the item opens over the board, list or channel you came from, so you keep your place. Opening a linked item from inside it replaces the view and adds a step to the trail of keys at the top; Back takes you to the previous item. Open full screen gives the item the whole window.
  • On phones and narrow windows, the item opens full screen.

The address of an open item includes its key, so Copy link gives a link that opens the same item over its board.

The header#

The header stays in place while you scroll. It has Back, the trail of items you opened, Open full screen, Copy link and Close, then the item’s title and status.

  • Tap the title, or press E, to rename the item. Enter saves and Esc puts it back.
  • Select the status (Change status) to move the item to another status. Only the moves the workflow allows are offered; if a move needs fields, the app asks for them first.
  • Watch or Unwatch follows the item. See Watching.
  • More actions (⋯) opens the actions menu. See The actions menu.

Details, Thread and History#

The item has three tabs, each scrolling on its own:

  • Details: the fields, the description, subtasks or the epic’s items, links, GitHub activity, linked docs, watchers, and where the item is mentioned.
  • Thread: the item’s own conversation. See Items in chat.
  • History: every change to the item, who made it and when. Select Show older changes to go further back.

When the item is wide enough, Details sits on the left and Thread and History on the right. On a computer, Ctrl/Cmd+1, Ctrl/Cmd+2 and Ctrl/Cmd+3 switch tabs. The app remembers the last tab you picked.

The description#

The description reads like a page. To change it:

  1. Select Edit description, or double-click the text on a computer, or tap it on a phone.
  2. Write in the same editor as Pages: headings, lists, checklists, quotes, code and tables.
  3. Select Done or press Esc. Your changes also save on their own a moment after you stop typing.

Offline, the description saves on this device (“Saved on this device”) and is sent when you’re back online.

If someone else changed the same part of the description while you were editing, a notice says The description changed. Select Compare to see both versions side by side, then Use current, Edit mine or Keep mine.

Mentions#

Type @ in the editor to mention a member of the project’s channel. They get a notification when you save, if they can see the item. Mentions show the person’s current name, as in chat.

Images#

Descriptions don’t take uploaded images: pasting, dropping or inserting a picture doesn’t add it. A description can’t show an image from a web address either: the app asks you to remove a linked image before it saves. To share a screenshot, post it in the item’s Thread.

Subtasks and an epic’s items#

  • A standard item’s Subtasks section lists its subtasks with their progress (“2 of 5 done”). Select Add subtask, type a title and press Enter.
  • An epic’s Items in this epic section lists the items under it. Select Add item to add one.

Cancelled subtasks and items don’t count toward the progress.

The parent epic#

An item’s epic, or a subtask’s parent item, shows in Details like a linked item, with its type, key, title and status. Select it to open the parent: over the board with Back to return on wider screens, or as a new page on phones.

To put the item under another epic, select Change epic. Only people who can edit the item see it.

Convert a subtask#

In the actions menu:

  • Convert to subtask turns a standard item into a subtask. Choose its Parent item, then select Convert. An item that has subtasks of its own can’t become a subtask.
  • Convert to standard item turns a subtask into a standard item.

The type, the status and the parent change together. If the server refuses the change, the item stays as it was. Converting needs a connection.

Links show how items relate. In Details, select Link to another item, choose how this item relates, and search by key or title:

  • blocks / is blocked by
  • duplicates / is duplicated by
  • relates to

Each link shows on both items, read from that item’s side. Select Remove link to take one off. Adding and removing links needs a connection. A linked item you can’t see shows as No access.

Watching#

Watching an item gets you notifications when its status, assignee or due date changes and when someone replies in its thread.

  • You watch an item automatically when you create it, when it’s assigned to you, and when you comment in its thread.
  • Select Watch or Unwatch in the header to change it yourself. An unwatch sticks: commenting again doesn’t make you a watcher.
  • The Watchers section lists everyone watching the item. It needs a connection to load.

See Work notifications for what each event sends.

Docs and mentions#

  • Docs links pages from the channel’s Docs tab to the item. Select Link a doc to pick one, or New doc to create and link a new page.
  • Mentioned in lists the messages and pages you can read that mention the item’s key. It needs a connection to load.

The actions menu#

More actions (⋯) in the header offers, depending on your role and the item:

  • Copy key and Copy link.
  • Move to another project: moves the item to the project of another channel you’re in. Its thread, with its replies and files, moves too, so everyone in the other channel can read it. Watchers who aren’t in that channel stop watching, and its sprint, fix version, labels and any fields the other project doesn’t have are cleared. A subtask moves with its parent. The item gets a new key, and the old key keeps leading to it.
  • Change type: picks another type at the same level. If the new type follows another workflow, you choose the item’s status in it.
  • Convert to subtask or Convert to standard item.
  • Create linked item.
  • Share to channel: posts the item in its channel, with an optional message.
  • Delete: for the item’s reporter and project admins. Its title, description, fields and thread replies are erased for everyone, and its subtasks are deleted too. Its key isn’t used again.

Moving, changing the type, converting and deleting need a connection.
