Notifications
buildIt.social lets you know about new messages, mentions, replies and calls, on whichever device you’re using. You choose how much each conversation notifies you, and when you’d rather not be disturbed.
On each device#
- Phones and tablets: push notifications. The app asks for permission when you first sign in. Calls ring on the system call screen, like an ordinary phone call.
- Windows and Mac: desktop notifications, while the app is running. Closing the window doesn’t quit the app: it keeps running in the tray (Windows) or the menu bar (Mac) and keeps notifying you. The app’s icon on the taskbar (Windows) or in the Dock (Mac) shows how many messages are unread.
- The web: turn on Browser notifications in Settings → Notifications, and allow them when your browser asks. Messages and calls then notify you even when the tab is hidden or closed. If you blocked notifications earlier, allow them in your browser’s site settings first.
In the app itself, numbers on Channels, DMs and Work show what’s unread (Finding your way around).
Tip: Use buildIt.social on your computer during the day? Turn on Send to my phone only when I’m away from my computer in Settings → Notifications. Your phone stays quiet while you’re at your computer, and gets what you haven’t read once you’ve been away for 10 minutes.
Choosing what notifies you#
Each channel and DM has a bell. Select it to choose one of three levels:
- All messages: every new message.
- Mentions and replies: only when someone mentions you or replies in your threads.
- Nothing: never, not even for mentions. Calls still ring.
Settings → Notifications lists the conversations and projects where you’ve changed the level, under Per conversation and project. There you also choose whether notifications show a message’s text, with Preview on the lock screen and in banners.
Taking a break#
- Pause notifications for a while: open the account menu (your picture), select Pause notifications, and choose how long, from 30 minutes to tomorrow morning. Select Resume to turn them back on early.
- Do not disturb outside your working hours: in Settings → Notifications, turn on Follow my working hours. Your working hours are the ones on the Schedule.
On Windows and Mac, the tray or menu bar icon’s menu also lets you set your status, set a status message, and turn on Do not disturb for 1 hour.
