The apps

buildIt.social works the same way everywhere: the desktop apps for Windows and Mac, the web app in your browser, and the apps for phones and tablets. Sign in with the same account on each, and your conversations and work follow you.

Windows and Mac#

The desktop apps are the fullest way to use buildIt.social, with notifications, the tray or menu bar, and keyboard shortcuts.

  • Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Run the installer from the Download page. buildIt.social then lives in the tray, at the right of the taskbar.
  • Mac: macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Open the disk image from the Download page and drag buildIt.social to Applications. It sits in the menu bar.

When you close the window, the app keeps running in the tray or menu bar, so you still get notified of new messages and calls. To quit, use the tray or menu bar icon’s menu and choose Quit buildIt.social. To have the app start when you sign in to your computer, turn on Open at sign-in in Settings → Preferences.

Updates#

The desktop apps update themselves. They check for a new version once a day, and you can check now with Check for updates in Settings → About.

The web#

Use buildIt.social in your browser at app.buildit.social, with nothing to install. It’s handy on a computer where you can’t install apps.

The web app can notify you even when its tab is hidden or closed: turn on Browser notifications in Settings → Notifications, and allow notifications when your browser asks. See Notifications.

Note: Some keyboard shortcuts belong to your browser, so the web app leaves them alone. For example, Ctrl/Cmd+K opens search in the desktop apps but not on the web.

iPhone, iPad and Android#

On a phone or tablet, calls ring like ordinary phone calls, on the system call screen, and messages arrive as push notifications.

The phone and tablet apps aren’t in the App Store or Google Play yet. Your org’s owner or admin can tell you how to get them.
