Managing channels

For org owners and admins

There’s no separate channels page in Settings: channels are managed from each channel’s details. Org owners and admins can do there everything a channel’s managers can, in any channel they can see, and a few things only they can do.

To open a channel’s details, select its name at the top of the chat. How the details work for everyone is in The channel details.

What only owners and admins can do#

In the channel details, under Settings:

  • Make public: everyone in the org (not guests) can then find and join the channel, and read all of its past messages.
  • For everyone in the org: turns a channel into one that everyone belongs to (below).
  • Delete channel: deletes its messages, files and pages for everyone, for good. Type the channel’s name to confirm, then select Delete for everyone. A channel with a project can’t be deleted: turn the project off, or archive the channel, instead.
  • Archive channel and Unarchive channel for a channel that’s for everyone in the org.

Owners and admins can also delete other people’s messages in conversations they’re in.

What managers can do too#

A channel’s managers, and org owners and admins, can Rename channel, Make private, Archive channel, set Who can pin messages, add and remove people, and use Make manager and Remove as manager. Whoever creates a channel is its first manager.

Channels for everyone in the org#

Turn on For everyone in the org in a channel’s Settings, and everyone in the org who isn’t a guest joins it now, and new members join it automatically. Its details show Everyone. Nobody can leave it or be removed from it, and only owners and admins can archive it.

Use it for announcements and company-wide chat. Every new org starts with #general, a channel for everyone.

Tip: Archive a channel that’s done rather than deleting it. It becomes read only, keeps its history, and can be unarchived.
