Connect GitHub
For org owners and admins
Connect a GitHub account, a personal account or a GitHub organization, and the branches, commits and pull requests that mention a work item’s key show on that item. What people see then is in GitHub linking.
buildIt.social reads branch names, commit messages, and pull request titles and descriptions that mention your keys. It never reads your code.
It’s in Settings → Integrations → GitHub, in the desktop and web apps.
Connect an account#
- Open Settings → Integrations → GitHub and select Connect GitHub.
- GitHub opens: in your browser from the desktop app, or in the same tab on the web. Install the buildIt.social app on the account, and choose all repositories or only the ones you pick. Meanwhile the desktop app says “Finish in your browser. This page updates when GitHub is connected.” Stop waiting gives up.
- Back on the page, Confirm the GitHub connection shows the account, its repositories and who completed it on GitHub. Connect it only if you started this and expected this account. Select Connect, or Reject if it isn’t what you expected. It waits for you for 30 minutes.
When it’s done, the page says GitHub is connected. and adds a card for the account.
Already installed on GitHub?#
If the app is already installed on the GitHub account, for example after an owner of a GitHub organization approved your request there, use Link an existing installation instead.
To connect more accounts, use the same buttons, under Connect another GitHub account.
Each account#
An account’s card shows:
- whether it’s a GitHub organization or Personal account, with All repositories or how many are selected;
- Active, or Suspended on GitHub, when nothing new is linked until it’s unsuspended there;
- who linked it and when;
- Linking history while it links the branches, commits and pull requests from before you connected;
- Repositories, each with Private or Archived if it is, its last activity, and a switch to stop linking from it.
Manage repositories on GitHub opens GitHub, where you add or remove repositories.
Disconnect#
Select Disconnect on the account’s card. The confirmation says how many work items have links from it: those links are removed. Also uninstall the buildIt.social app from GitHub is ticked. Untick it to leave the app installed on GitHub, where its events are then ignored.
Note: Project admins choose whether merged pull requests move items to Done, in each project’s settings. See Move items to Done when pull requests merge.
